Driving in Japan – Basic Rules
Japan's drivers stick to the left-hand side of the road and must wear seat-belts (drivers and passengers), when they are on expressways.
It is not permitted to use cellphones/mobiles/smartphones, while driving a vehicle.
On expressways the speed limit ranges from 80 km/h to 100 km/h. On non-expressways the speed limit ranges from 30 km/h to 60 km/h.
Children below the age of 6 must use an infant/toddler/child safety seat. If you are hiring a car, you must ask for safety seats for your children, as this is required by Japanese law.
Driving Licence Requirements for Car Hire in Japan
Customers with driving licences issued in France, Germany, Switzerland, Estonia, Monaco, Belgium and Taiwan don't need an International Driving Licence, but must have a valid driver's licence issued by their country plus a valid passport, when they rent a car in Japan. They must also show an official translation of their driving documents. This they can obtain from Embassies and Consulates based in Japan or from Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) offices. Motorists from Taiwan can get document translation from Motor Vehicles Offices in Taiwan.
